Now and then at the beach

The wave action causes ripples in the sand which the retreating tide exposes.

In the distance to the left, the Confederation Bridge looms large.

To the right, Seacow Head Lighthouse stands guard over Seven Mile Bay.

This is Chelton Beach, a day use park in Prince Edward Island, a perfect place to spend some time. We visited the park with our grandchildren and our daughter recently.

Of course we had a picnic, after which we walked over the embankment to the beach where it was low tide. We set up on an exposed sand bar for a few hours until the advancing tide caused us to retreat to the shoreline. Meanwhile just off-shore, paddle boarders stood tall above the water.

This beach had tidal pools but without the animals present at Canoe Cove. There aren’t starfish or clams to explore. Here the two types of jellyfish which frequent the waters around Prince Edward Island were prominent as well as varieties of seaweed.

The jellyfish, some transparent White Moon and lots of purple Lion’s Mane were of interest to the grandchildren because of their fear of being stung.

The Lion’s Mane are called Blood Suckers by islanders and knowing that, the kids were sure to avoid them and not silently either.

They played in the sand on this beach,

creating sand walls and digging until water filled the holes where they placed small White Moon jellyfish for observation. They certainly didn’t play with the purple ones.

I walked among the seaweed floating in the advancing tide. Fifty years ago, when I attended university, I enjoyed courses in marine biology. My childhood summers in Maddox Cove, Newfoundland, made me want to know more about nature. All these years later, the beauty of the seaweed waving in the water is just as fascinating to me as it was all those years ago.

Did I just write fifty years?

Such a wonderful place to be able to visit, and to have your grands with you is very special. I love that picture of the three of them playing in the sand. :-)

I wouldn't mind having a go at photographing that lighthouse.

I can't believe it either when I think or say something was "fifty years ago." Makes it sound like we're OLD or something.

Fifty years, no children or grandchildren then so I think it's been worth putting in the time to have those lovely people in my life. Your photos are a breath of fresh air this morning.

I love looking at bridges, but I'm deathly afraid of being ON them. I have a real fear of falling off bridges. No fear of falling anywhere else (well, except roller coasters), but driving on bridges FREAKS ME OUT. I wonder if I've fallen via such thing in a past life..?

Its a shock to the system to actually write those year numbers..me too.
The 60's don't seem that long ago to me but to my Grands they are ancient history..HaHa.
When we were on vacation in the Carribean years ago..I remember being stung by jellyfish...not a good memory. I don't blame the kids for avoiding them.
What a beautiful place to picnic too.

The beach where time stands still and dreams come alive. What beautiful photos and having your grandkids playing in the sand is priceless. I remember being at the beach as a small kid and in the distance you could barely make out a tree. I always thought the tree was on a special island. When I grew up, I found out that it was over in the next town. :)

Yet another wonderful day. For you all.
Years, schmears. I am very glad (and unsurprised) that you retain your interest and wonder at the natural world. A wonder I am sure you have passed on.

When I was kid, jellyfish stings me...painful.

Have a wonderful summer, hope, kids are strong and healthy during this summer season.

Lots of thoughts as I read this post.
Fully understand your comment,"Did I just write 50 years?" It seems just like yesterday.
Last year, We were in the next bay, off Macquaire Rd. Such a wonderful view across to this amazing bridge. In winter I love to open the webcam for the bridge and watch the sheets of ice moving beneath it.
Your photo of the floating seaweed, is wonderful.
Again, on our visit last year, we were walking around the Peakes Quay Marina in Charlottetown, when we spotted literally hundreds of Lion's Mane Jellyfish in the water. We were mesmerised by their beauty and movement for quite some time.

Hahaha. I always laugh when I say I did something 50 or so years ago. Amazing isn't it. I had a phone conversation with my dear friend who I shared my first apartment with - 50 years ago.

Hello, Marie

I love the beach scenes, the ripples in the sand are neat. The jelly fish is beautiful, I like it's purple color. Love the views of the bridge and lighthouse. Cute shot of your grandchildren. Fifty years can go by quickly. Have a great day and a happy weekend!

Super beach shots Marie, jelly fish are such fascinating creatures, at certain times of the year we have thousands of tiny jellyfish that have a shocker of a sting 😱

That long bridge shot makes me remember getting stuck in the middle of one years ago because of an accident in front of us. Not being able to go forward or back and having the long expanse of water under me was surreal.

It is so hot today that I wish I could be there playing with your grandchildren. I would even welcome a good splash and spray pad.

Hi Marie, You did write "fifty" ... oh my goodness, we must be about the same. :-) Another fine post here. I am impressed with the water ... so clear for ocean water. Thanks for sharing your day at the beach.

Fifty years, I just realized, had my first husband lived we would be celebrating our fiftieth wedding anniversary this year. What lovely beaches your grandchildren have to enjoy! Such good childhood memories for them to look back on.💖

What is fifty years??? Our granddaughter would love to have a beach to play on...I bet she and your grands could be the best of friends. She never meets anyone she doesn't like.

Beautiful beach scenes - great photos!
If you try the refrigerator pickle recipe on my blog (Thanks for your visit!), be sure to use home-grown or farmers' market cucumbers, not the grocery store ones that have been waxed to keep them fresh.
Have a great week!
