Flight

Some of my favourite avians, geese, like those we see in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, this time of year, enjoy the coastline near The Confederation Bridge. While we enjoyed our picnic on the Chelton beach, further down the beach, a gaggle gathered.

As I have noticed before, when I walked towards them,

they kept a constant distance between us,

moving away as I approached their location.

The sight of the geese with the bridge in the background was a picture of natural beauty against a backdrop of human ingenuity.

However that same ingenuity has threatened all creatures with our uncontrolled industrialization. The natural instinct of the geese to move away from danger does not protect them from the changes we have made to the planet. There may come a time when the geese won't be on the water or anywhere else. I fear for them and us.

Geese have a reason to be afraid of us...

Did you tell me some geese migrate and others don't? We now have year-round Canada geese here.

Echoing your final sentiments. And mourning for the species we threaten. Including (some days) our own.

How beautiful...lovely photos. Our Canada geese sure get around.

Thank you for your thoughtful post. My heart is heavy today. I needed some beauty to reflect on.

They sure do. On our way home we saw a harvested potato field which had a blind on the far side for hunters this time of year. However, hunters are the least of the geese's concerns.

All of the geese on this island migrate in late December. In some parts of Canada, some geese don't migrate.

How true, EC. If we don't care for other living things, we threaten our own existence

They aren't here all summer either. They arrive in the springfor a time, then go further north, heading back around Labour Day. They leave in late December. They rack up lots of air miles.

I feel the same, Jan, and it isn't my country. Thinking of you...

Lovely to see the Candian geese against the backdrop of the bridge. They are a common sight here further along the coast. I too fear for the environmental impact of recent decisions. Sarah x

I know, Sarah. We can only pray the environment is a priority.
