I didn’t want to be encumbered with a bag so my license and phone were in my pockets, camera on the seat. I was ready! Shades of approaching sunset filled the sky. As I drove towards the bay, cormorants in their v formations were headed away from the water for points inland. Night was falling!
There were people on the boardwalk and I felt safe though I was on my own tonight. I headed to the gazebo, a favourite location for bird observation, though I didn’t expect to see any this time of day. It is a great vantage point for views out the bay as well.
Looking out on the water, a spotlight from the last rays of sun was focussed on Indian Head Lighthouse. “Capture that for sure,” I said aloud. Camera on and up...uh-oh, No Card Present screamed at me through the viewfinder. The SD card was home on the mantle. After thoughts best left unspoken, I drove home.
Sunset had passed but light lingered in the western sky. Determination made me take photos of the pink and orange sky from the balcony.
I like the results.

That's one reason I've grown so fond of using my cellphone as my camera, too. I don't have to worry about any cards being missing. Your shots are lovely, Marie. Good job! :-)
Oh, you have my sympathies. YOu were so full of anticipation. I always carry a small net bag that has extra cards, batteries and a lens cloth. But even I sometimes just run out the door and find my camera has power for only a few shots.
Oh how I relate to that Marie.. when we were taking the Dwellingup photos at the weekend my battery ran out half way through and I had to persuade Aimee to 'share' her battery with me 😀 Beautiful images here, I sometimes think the light after sunrise and sunset is almost better than the event itself!
I learned the hard way there were exactly six shots in the memory of my camera. Made me very selective.
I can relate, either that or battery has run out just when a great scene is to be captured. Stunning, the only word to describe the photos, at least you tried. Greetings!

I believe that happens to everyone one time or another. I hate it when I go for my camera and I actually forgot to take it with me. These photos are fantastic, at least you got something to cheer for.

There is a definite advantage to a cell phone for sure, Jan.
Once my battery quit after a few shots too, Tabor. I hope never to go without the card again though.
That magical time of day before and after sunrise is wonderful, as you said, PDP. I haven't managed a sunrise shoot yet. That hour of morning is when I get my best sleep.

My husband never seems to have any issues with his camera, Sarah. He is a gadget person though and into technology in a big way.

I always carry a camera with me in case I see something worth capturing, but I never do, until one night last week. I was out for a walk when I came across two foxes sitting at the side of the road just watching the world go by. As I approached them they never moved and I stood about 3 yards from them and they didn't seem disturbed at all, just sat looking at me. I slowly reached into my pocket for my camera, and suddenly remembered I had left it on charge at home! I missed what could have been an award winning shot! The two foxes slowly got up, stretched and walked away into the woods. . . Damn!
Oh the regrets of the missed perfect shots! I too have done such a thing, and try to keep an extra SD card in my purse, along with a battery... just in case. I felt your pain! I hope the sunset cooperates for you again on another evening when your camera is all set :) Hugs!

I think all photographers know that sickening feeling upon discovering they have forgotten their memory card, Maria. UGH. When Astrid is with me, however, her Big Girl camera holds TWO memory cards, so I'm always safe, since the "other" one fits my camera. Whew for me. Good for you to salvage the situation in the end...even if from your balcony!
