Shades of grey

Cavendish Grove in the national park on Prince Edward Island is a favourite location for my husband and I. It is a great place to have a picnic and walk in nature. On a cold but calm day recently, we had a great picnic there and walked through the grey.

The snow has been gone for several weeks now and spring is in the air. Trees are in bud and look to be developing nicely. For now, the trees are grey, trunk, branch and twig all give the impression of gloom, but there is much more going on.

Various textures give the trunks and branches character.

The grey of the lichens adds another dimension, as if they were painted tone on tone.

The shapes of the trunks of the trees in the grove are obvious without leaves as a distraction. Unusual shapes draw attention and almost take on an alien form.

The path has walls of grey,

which reach at least twenty meters high. Twigs stretch between trunks, uprights of various sizes, making a network of grey.

The hoof fungus stands out because of its shape but its colour blends in nicely.

It adds another texture to the tree grey. Behind the grey, a muted brown provides highlights.

Any colour here is muted now.

The white trunks of birches provide a bit of contrast.

We had a picnic in the grove, wearing our hand warmers as we ate.

The hot tea helped as did the walk after lunch. We only saw one other person during our time there.

The new green of spring will soon overshadow the grey for the next six months. It will emerge again as the leaves disappear for another year.

Very nice captures of the shapes of the trees. Ours are leafing out now.

So different from the green lushness I see around here. It seems that the latitude of PEI is not much different from here, but the climate is quite different. I love that you have introduced me to this part of the world I knew little about, Marie. PEI is beautiful. I am glad we are friends. :-)

We have so much gray blah here in Central Ohio in the winter it makes me a bit crazy. I can hardly wait until we have some green and then the colors of spring. The older I get the less I tolerate the gray blahs day after day. I wish I had your outlook, it would make winter less of chore.

Very subtle and beautiful images that provide a contrast to the blaring technicolour of our spring, which has been illuminated by cloudless skies for the last few days. More grey coming soon though! :)

Your photos are extraordinary. I know you will return and give us a view in springtime green! Hot tea must have been a welcome treat on that day.

Aas an artist, I love those colors. It would be a pleasure to illustrate those trees in pencil.

I love trees pictures but I do have to say it looks like the home of the Headless Horseman.

I love the grey Marie. Your trees will be budding and greening up while ours are going golden and losing their leaves, soon we will be walking in the grey ✨

What you have shown here, Marie, bears testament to the joys of Mother Nature preparing her canvas for yet another season. I love that you and your husband get out-n-about to see these changes...and then share them with us. Thank you.

Trees are still grey here, too, Marie, but I love it just as much as when they all turn green. Every season has its own beauty, as you so perfectly illustrate with your blog!
