The new normal

Sunset is earlier every day. The daytime temperatures are just above zero and below zero over night. We have arrived at that time of year when our warmest clothes are not only out of storage but on us when we go for a walk. The windchill makes them necessary.

One afternoon recently, waiting for our granddaughter to finish dance practice meant time for a walk along the boardwalk. During these early days of winter conditions, we are adjusting to the cold and bitter winds again. It will be several weeks before our bodies adjust.

This view of the harbour will change in a few weeks as ice forms for another winter. Fishing shacks will be brought to the ice and residents will fish for smelt, one of the pleasures of winter. Before long those ducks, enjoying the last rays of this day, will search out the rare places where there is open water.

The days of muted daylight are on the horizon as well with the winter solstice a month away. Before long there will be days when it is impossible to walk here or anywhere as weather worsens and a nor’easter causes a white-out. Meanwhile we are adjusting to the new normal.

You guys are rock stars. You keep moving even when it’s that cold! I’d be home by the fire.

What a beautiful word picture describing the dying year. Here in west Michigan, our winters are characterized by gray overcast. This hides the sun, but moderates our weather. The old farmers have a saying about the new year, "As the day lengthens the winter strengthens.

It's been a wintry November, but we are having a bit of a less frosty spell for a few days.

Every year our bodies react like it's the first time we've ever experienced winter, LOL!

Wow, gorgeous views of the sea and sky. I am not looking forward to a cold winter or a lot of snow. Wishing you a happy day!

Wonderful and moody shots.

Beautiful pictures. I can't even imagine that kind of cold although if I had "real" winter clothes, I'd probably enjoy it.

So beautiful and cold. I've got my heavy wool blanket on my bed again and we are nowhere near the low temps you have.

Yes, winter brings some challenges, but it also has a special beauty.

Beautiful photos, Marie. You always have to keep moving to stay warm but you already know that. :)

I'm beginning to wonder what the new norm is weather wise Marie. It's still spring here in Perth and we have already had several well above average hot days, it doesn't bode well for summer, hopefully I'm wrong. I love seeing your beautiful winter shots as much as some enjoy seeing my blue skies ✨

Here's to you guys adjusting to the new normal. We've been winter for a bit now and already adjusted. Although this weekend we're having a heat wave, or so I hear. It'll be around 4C here. Break out the bathing suits and the sun screen. It's gonna be a hot one this weekend. It's funny when 40F/4C feels like a heatwave.

Having lived in the southern U.S. all my life, it would be hard to adjust to such bitter cold/wind.

And in one more month we can add a minute a day!

I like the winter, but I don't really care for the short days. I never have enough time to do things.

Now that my sister and brother live in Maine, 16 miles apart, I am learning all about what you have described here, Marie. You'd think that we here in the Netherlands would be able to relate, but not nowadays, with climate change. However, I must say that our "winter" thus far is already feeling colder than what I've experienced these last 10 years. Maybe we, too, will be seeing a "new normal" from years gone by?

That first shot is so beautiful. The other night was thinking about how long it would be till the days start getting longer again.
